Mental Health

Welcome to mental health

Like physical health, positive mental health promotes success in life. As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “[m]ental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.” At Sedalia Elementary, we prioritize three critical and inter-related components of mental health: social (how we relate to others), emotional (how we feel), and behavioral (how we act) supports to promote overall well-being.

Social Health

Social health can be defined as our ability to interact and form meaningful relationships with others. It also relates to how comfortably we can adapt in social situations. Social relationships have an impact on our mental health, physical health and mortality risk.

Emotional Health

People who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They're able to cope with life's challenges. They can keep problems in perspective and bounce back from setbacks. They feel good about themselves and have good relationships.

Behavioral Health

Behavioral health refers to how our daily cognitive habits affect our overall well-being, emotions, biology, and behavior. It’s often used interchangeably with mental health, but is actually a far more expansive term that incorporates not just our mental wellness, but the way our thoughts play out in real life.

Maureen Martinez - School Counselor

Hello,

My name is Maureen Seibel and I am so excited to be at Sedalia Elementary! I am a Colorado native and a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, where I received my Bachelors Degree in Sociology and my Masters Degree in Counseling.  I am an avid movie watcher who loves to cook, bake and spend time with my dog, friends, and family. I am so excited to get to know you all and navigate this school year together!

Dixie Payne - Behavior Technician

Hi there!  My name is Dixie Payne and I am a fifth generation Colorado resident.  I have a bachelors degree in Child Psychology/Sociology and did my graduate work at the University of Idaho in Multicultural Anthropology.  I spent the first 27 years of my career working with at-risk youth and during the last 8 years I have worked in the Douglas County School system as an Educational Assistant running social and emotional groups and now as the Behavioral Technician  at Sedalia Elementary.

I am now honored and privileged to be part of our dynamic mental health team providing services and building healthy and positive relationships with our students.

In my free time, I love to spend time with my partner JL and our two incredible sons, our wonderful daughter, and our two awesome dogs camping, hiking, fishing, and enjoying everything our beautiful state has to offer as well as fun times traveling to the beach.

Hal Anderson - School Psychologist

Hi! I have been the School Psychologist at Sedalia Elementary since August 2021.  I earned a B.S. in Experimental Psychology from the University of South Carolina.  I earned a M.A. in Psychology and an Ed.S. in School Psychology from the Citadel Graduate School.  I grew up on the coast of South Carolina and moved to CO in July of 2020.

I'm an avid fly fisherman, aggressively mediocre snowboarder, and compose and play music in my free time.

I look forward to another year working with an amazing group of students at Sedalia Elementary!
